The Effect of Fall-Related Factors on Colles’ Fracture

چکیده

INTRODUCTION Distal forearm fracture is one of the most frequently observed osteoporotic fractures which may occur as a result of low energy falls such as falls from a standing height and may be linked to the osteoporotic nature of the bone especially in the elderly. In order to improve both the diagnosis of high fracture risk individuals and the fracture prevention methods, the influence of extrinsic and intrinsic factors during a fall needs to be identified in detail. In this study, fracture mechanics-based cohesive finite element method, which was shown to successfully predict the effect of intrinsic bone properties on Colles’ fracture load [1], is used to assess the combined effect of the extrinsic and intrinsic factors on radius fracture. The current study (i) evaluates the influence of the load orientation and the load distribution between the scaphoid and lunate on the Colles’ fracture load (ii) establishes a robust fracture risk assessment method that combines the effects of intrinsic properties of bone (age-related change in fracture properties and bone geometry) with extrinsic factors (load orientation and load distribution) associated with a fall, and (iii) determines the strongest predictive factor for Colles’ fracture load.

A new external fixation method in Colles’ fracture associated with the distal radioulnar joint dislocation in elderly patients

Background: Isolated distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocation is uncommon. It always associated with the radius and ulna fracture (distal radius fracture, Galeazzi, Monteggia fracture or the Essex-Lopresti forearm fracture). Many of DRUJ dislocation associated with distal radius fracture, especially Colles’ fracture. Volar locking plate (VLP) must be used to fix the distal fragments and the c...

Off-axis loads cause failure of the distal radius at lower magnitudes than axial loads: a finite element analysis.

Distal radius (Colles') fractures are a common fall-related injury in older adults and frequently result in long-term pain and reduced ability to perform activities of daily living. Because the occurrence of a fracture during a fall depends on both the strength of the bone and upon the kinematics and kinetics of the impact itself, we sought to understand how changes in bone mineral density (BMD...

Age and sex influences on fall characteristics.

OBJECTIVE To investigate age and sex influences on fall characteristics. METHODS A total of 1243 subjects (517 males and 726 females) aged 50 years and over and drawn from population based sampling frames were invited to complete an interviewer administered questionnaire concerning descriptive characteristics of falls experienced in the previous four months. Information collected included det...

Cases of Fracture of Left Humerus, and Dislocation of the Wrist-Joint

ruary, 1866, with compound fracture of left humerus, just above the condyle, and compound Colles' fracture of the same side. The fracture was owing to a fall, which the patient sustained on her left hand, from the verandah of a one-storied house. A portion of humerus, about one inch long, was denuded of periosteum, and protruded through a wound on the outer side, about two inches in length. The...

The distal radio-ulnar joint in Colles' fractures.

The effect of involvement of the distal radio-ulnar joint on subsequent function was studied in 170 patients with Colles' fractures, reviewed for one year after cast removal. Patients with involvement of this joint had significantly weaker grips and a significantly greater incidence of pain and tenderness over the joint at all stages of follow-up. They also had a poorer range of supination at s...
